"In 1909, Brancusi carved this work, which he entitled Danaïde, from porous stone. This rough-looking sculpture, in which only a few lines are sketched and the neck is barely suggested, is reminiscent of an archaeological piece. He leaves it in this form as a link between a sculpture found in an excavation and the personalized creation of a modern artist. It is astonishing because it was made at a time when he was seeking to extract its essence through extreme finishing work, through intense polish."
