In 1947, when Geneva publisher Gérald Cramer suggested to Paul Eluard that A toute épreuve be published as an artist's book, Eluard immediately suggested Joan Miró. This titanic publication, one of the finest examples of Surrealist books, was the fruit of ten years' work with the help of Enric Tormo, requiring the engraving of no fewer than 233 wooden blocks. Enclosed: a l. a. s. from Miró to Eluard, 2 bills in response to a request for a reproduction of his painting "La Ferme" and the book's prospectus.
