Martin). First edition illustrated with 80 original color woodcuts by Joan Miró, including the cover, some with collages. Edition of 130 copies on papeteries d'Arches vellum pur chiffon, signed by Joan Miró. Miró's illustrated masterpiece. In 1947, when Geneva publisher Gérald Cramer suggested to Paul Eluard that A toute épreuve be published as an artist's book, Eluard immediately suggested Joan Miró. This titanic publication, one of the finest examples of Surrealist books, was the fruit of ten years' work with the help of Enric Tormo, requiring the engraving of no fewer than 233 wooden blocks. Enclosed: a l. a. s. from Miró to Eluard, 2 bills in response to a request for a reproduction of his painting "La Ferme" and the book's prospectus.
