This poetic suite, Vitam impendere amori, illustrated with drawings by André Rouveyre, belongs to the more traditional, melancholic part of Apollinaire's poetics, while the more modern Calligrammes were published at the same time. But the verses in this slim collection follow in the footsteps of the best Alcools poems, with a spontaneity and rhythm of incomparable fluidity. Some pieces have become famous, such as these elegiac verses of ever-vivid emotion, and evoking some dark popular romance: "O ma jeunesse abandonnée Like a faded garland Here comes the season And of disdain and suspicion n".
