ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). Les confessions. Vignettes by MM. T. Johannot, H. Baron, K. Girardet, E. Laville, C. Nanteuil, etc. Paris, Barbier, 1846. Large in-8, eggplant morocco, 4-nerved spine framed with gold thread, framed with a broad cold thread and gilded fillets with gold fleurons, inner dent, white moire endpapers, gilt tr. (Contemporary binding). FIRST ISSUE: Frontispiece, 27 out-of-text compositions and woodcut vignettes in the text, notably after Tony Johannot, Baron, Girardet, Nanteuil. "A handsome, highly polished publication; a very rare work in fine condition" (Carteret, III, p. 523). One of the few copies containing the hors-texte on chine pastedown before the letter in remarkable binding condition (unsigned, but probably by Trautz-Bauzonnet) and free of foxing. From the libraries of Bordes de Fortage (bookplate), Van Der Rest (bookplate, 1964, Cat. No. 133) and E. de Rouvre (bookplate, 1979 sale, No. 214).
