Rare first edition (no large paper), recorded in the Bibliographie de la France of June 17, 1876. First-issue copy complete with censored parts. 3 f. n. ch. (blank, false-title, title), 248 pp. 1 blank f. This work, a few days after publication, was seized as containing outrages against public morality and good morals; the author was sentenced to imprisonment and the judgment ordered the book's suppression and destruction. A second edition, published in December 1876 by the same publisher, gave a text purged of verses for Idylle de pauvres (pp. 52-54), Voyou (p. 132) and Frère, il faut vivre (pp. 158-161), and of the entire Sonnet argotique (pp. 58-59), Fils de fille ((pp. 128-129) and Ballade de joyeuse vie (pp. 171-172). In-4, Bradel blue half-maroq. with corners, ornate spine, ill. covers (Carayon). Edition of 75 numbered copies on Hollande paper. - Complete with a cover (in 2 states) and 15 original lithographs by Steinlen.
