RENAN (Ernest). Marc Aurèle et la fin du monde antique. P., Impr. de Quantin, from April 29, 1880 to April 15, 1881. 61 plates, each 8 pages, folded, mounted on tabs and bound in an oblong in-4 album, full vellum, spine without nerves decorated throughout, n. r., slipcase (Durvand).
A PRECIOUS RELIC, CONSISTING OF THE GALLEY PROOFS OF ONE OF RENAN'S MOST IMPORTANT WORKS. All the leaves are dated and signed by him, and bear numerous autograph corrections, many of great importance, correcting or completing his thoughts. The first proof, sent to him on April 29, 1880, was not returned until the following December 3; and the last proof, sent out on October 28, was not returned by Renan until April 14, 1881; each sheet also bears the signature of the publisher Paul Lévy. We would like to cite just one example of reworking: here, plate 59 had the title of chapter XXX (corrected 31): "L'Empire chrétien" (The Christian Empire). In
In the original edition (1882), this chapter is entitled "Les Moeurs chrétiennes", and "L'empire chrétien" has become 33. These proofs were offered by Renan himself to Henry Harrisse (as evidenced by a handwritten note from the latter) and subsequently passed to the Eug. Richtenberger library, whose bookplate it bears.
