red chagrin, boards decorated with an important rocaille decoration executed with small gilded irons on an azure background and cold scrollwork, ornate ribbed spine, interior lace, blue moire lining and endpapers, gilded edges.

FIRST EDITION AND FIRST PRINT RUN. Forty out-of-text plates printed on chine monte with printed captions, and around 200 woodcut vignettes in the text.
Remarkable official publication, not placed on the market, undertaken to commemorate the expedition
led by the Duc d'Orléans, King Louis-Philippe's eldest son, to Algeria, just conquered and not yet pacified. It was printed by the Imprimerie Royale, illustrated by masters such as Raffet, Decamps and Dauzats, and engraved by the best specialists, Lavoignat, Lavieille, Rouget... The book was intended as a gift for members of the royal family, court dignitaries and the officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers who took part in the expedition. Superb present copy, printed in the name of M. Cunin-Gridaine (Minister-Secretary of State) in full contemporary red chagrin with rich rocaille decoration (Inf. stains on boards). Added 3 l. a. s. from the painter A. Dauzats to the sculptor Dantan.
