GOETHE (W.). Faust. Tragedy by M. de Goethe. Translated into - Lot 102
GOETHE (W.). Faust. Tragedy by M. de Goethe. Translated into French by M. Albert Stapfer. Decorated with a portrait of the author and seventeen drawings based on the main scenes of the work and executed on stone by M. Eugène Delacroix. Paris, Sautelet - Motte, 1828. In-fol. half green long-grained morocco, corners, smooth spine decorated with gold and cold rocaille motif, gilt head, illustrated cover by Deveria cons. untrimmed (P. - L. Martin). FIRST ISSUE: portrait of Goethe on Chine fixé and 17 ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHIES on Chine fixé by Eugène Delacroix (Loÿs Delteil, 57 to 74) printed outside the text. The text on laid paper. ONE OF THE VERY RARE EXEMPLAIRES CONTAINING ALL THESE PLATES ON CHINE FIXE, in magnificent proofs, pl. L'Ombre de Marguerite apparaissant à Faust, almost always incomplete in subject or le gende, is here absolutely complete. Before being bound, the copy belonged to the painter Riesener, friend and cousin of Eugène Delacroix, and later passed through the Henri and Alexis Rouart libraries (bookplate and handwritten note by M. Rouart indicating provenance). One of the most beautiful books of all time, and one of the first to be illustrated by a painter. A fine copy, with both sides of the rare cover, in perfect condition, despite the inevitable foxing. (Height: 422 mm - Width: 285 mm).
