(1885). In-4, long-grained green half-chagr. n.r., ill. cover and spine cons. (Rel. circa 1910). ORIGINAL EDITION of this book most typical of the japonisant art made fashionable by Burty and the Goncourts, the title and large out-of-text compositions are printed in color, the illustrations framing the text on each of the other pages are printed in different tones, all reproduced by the new Gillot process. These lovely poems are translated by Judith Gautier, daughter of the singer Ernesta Grisi and Théophile Gautier, who married Cattulle-Mendès and was beloved of Wagner. BEAUTIFUL AND PRECIOUS EXAMPLE ON JAPAN, bearing a beautiful dedication to Rémy de Gourmont. On the verso of the title page, which is entirely covered by this dedication, the author has written this other poem, not printed in the book: O! Cuckoo of the woods Still singing! and that a mirage, Created by your voice, Sounds to the wood of my old age The fiery midnight of yore!
