Large in-8, contemporary binding in chagrin chaudron, wide gilt frame on the boards, the middles of which are illustrated with a large gilt iron depicting Abd-el-Kader on horseback accompanied by two French infantrymen with rifles on their shoulders, spine without nerves decorated with an Arab warrior on a dromedary in front of a large palm tree, interior lace, lining and endpapers in white embossed moire, gilt edges (publisher's binding). FIRST EDITION. Copy with title dated 1844 (cf. Carteret, III, p. 254). 24 plates hors texte sous serpentes engraved on steel by Rouargue frères, entêtes, culs-de-lampe and 12 plates hors texte of colored military costumes engraved on wood after Raffet and a colored folding map of Algeria. A superb copy, as new, in a delightful binding decorated with Haraus's special ironwork. From the Roudinesco library.
