DORE (Gustave). The Legend of the Wandering Jew. Composition - Lot 85
DORE (Gustave). The Legend of the Wandering Jew. Compositions and drawings by Gustave Doré, woodcuts by F. Rouget, O. Jahyer and J. Gauchard, printed by J. Best. On sale at Michel Lévy frères, Libraires Editeurs, Paris, rue Vivienne, 2 bis (1858). Price: 12 francs paperback - 15 francs hardback. Very large folio in height, superb and extremely rare proof, printed on chine fixé and perfectly preserved, unfolded. This admirable original lithograph (Impr. Lemercier, Paris), a masterpiece of the Romantic illustrated poster and a masterpiece by Doré, is the counterpart of the famous Rue de la vieille lanterne (Death of Gérard de Nerval), partly treated with a scraper. It is unknown to M. Maindron, who did not mention it in his work Les Affiches illustrées (1886), nor to M. H. Beraldi, who did, however, give a detailed catalog of the Master's engraved work in his Graveurs du XIXe siècle. Much later (1931), M. H. Leblanc makes no further mention of the Master in his work.
