Hetzel, 1845-1846. 2 strong vol. gr. in-8°, navy blue percaline boards, spines and covers decorated with gilded plate decoration and special irons taken from the book: a frame reproducing small scenes and monuments of Paris with, in the center, the Devil with his hood for the first volume and the "Hermit Devil" for the second, smooth spines decorated in the same way, gilded edges (publisher's binding).
ORIGINAL EDITION AND FIRST ISSUE of a Romantic publication of literary and graphic importance. Unpublished works by George Sand, P.J. Stahl (J. Hetzel), Léon Gozlan, Frédéric Soulié, Théophile Gautier, Alfred de Musset, Eugène Sue, J. Janin, de Stendahl (sic), Honoré de Balzac ("j'ai écrit pour 3000 fr. de contes très drôles" à Mme Hanska). The profuse illustrations include some 800 handsome woodcut figures in the text and a further 212 hors texte by Gavarni, with the exception of the last four by Bertall (slight russeting).
