COSTUMES. - LANTE (Louis-Marie) & GATINE (Georges). Cost - Lot 68
COSTUMES. - LANTE (Louis-Marie) & GATINE (Georges). Costumes des femmes de Hambourg, du Tyrol, de la Hollande, de la Suisse, de la Franconie, de l'Espagne, du royaume de Naples, etc... P., chez l'éditeur, [Imprimerie de Crapelet], 1827. In-4 (343x243), cherry half-calf with corners, smooth spine decorated (period binding). First edition. A complete copy of this fine edition illustrated with 100 large plates engraved by Gatine - after drawings by Lanté and Vernet, all enhanced with bright colors, featuring mainly traditional costumes from Hamburg (7), Tyrol (6), Holland (6), Switzerland and France (48), Franconia (8), Spain (21), and Italy (4). These costumes were becoming increasingly rare at the time, as these words testify: "In almost all of Europe, women of the first class, and even those of the second, take it upon themselves to follow the fashions of Paris: it has therefore been necessary, in order to form a Gallery of Characteristic Costumes, to have the costumes of workers, and even of servants, drawn" (Preliminary Observations). The costumes show women and girls from the countryside, or working in various small trades (bouquetières, cuisinières, filles de chambre, fruitières, laitières, servantes, etc.). The explanations are written by Pierre de La Mésangère (1761-1831), worldly abbé and editor of the Journal des Dames et des Modes for 30 years. Louis-Marie Lanté and Horace Vernet, who were in charge of our book, were regular contributors to the regular contributors to the Journal des Dames.
