COIGNY (Aimée de), Duchess of Fleury. Alvare. P., de l'Impr. - Lot 62
COIGNY (Aimée de), Duchess of Fleury. Alvare. P., de l'Impr. de Firmin Didot, s. d. (1818). In-12, half brown calf, spine without nerves decorated with gold and cold, yellowish tr. (Rel. de l'époque). ORIGINAL EDITION of the only novel written by Aimée de Coigny, André Chénier's Young Captive, PRINTED IN ONLY 25 COPIES for her friends and published without an author's name. It was only in 1912, at the sale of the Château de Coigny library, that 5 paperback copies of this novel were discovered, the existence and print run of which we knew, but had never seen. Our copy, in period binding, appears to be the only one described in this condition; it comes from the libraries of the Marquis de Fouille (bookplate), Descams-Scrive (bookplate, 2nd part, No. 197) and Dr. Lucien-Graux (bookplate, one name (p. 219) has been corrected in pencil). Cf. note on this work in cat. Le Mouvement romantique by M. M. Escoffier, No. 279, who writes: "It may well have been Latouche who persuaded the Duchesse de Fleury to publish Alvare, since La Jeune Captive was to be printed in the volume of André Chénier's works".
