SILVESTRE (Israël). Views of France, drawn and engraved by I - Lot 39
SILVESTRE (Israël). Views of France, drawn and engraved by Israel Silvestre. A Paris, chez Henriet, s. d. (circa 1649-55). In-4, marbled fawn calf, 6-ribbed spine, small framing serrations on boards, yellowish tr. (19th-century English binding). Very fine collection of 163 pieces in FIRST EDITION, representing the most beautiful monuments, hotels and castles in and around Paris, as well as in the main cities of France. A very fresh copy, with superb proofs on watermarked paper (10 plates, the last 9 of which are oval, are mounted). Many plates were engraved by Pérelle or S. della Bella. (Back rest.) Israel Silvestre (1621-1691). Born into the artistic milieu of 17th-century Lorraine, which saw the rise of Jacques Bellange, Claude Deruet, Georges de La Tour, Jacques Callot... Israel Silvestre was orphaned at an early age, moved to Paris to live with his uncle Israel Henriet, Callot's print dealer. To perfect his training, he travelled in France and Italy, becoming a marvellous witness to his era, whose style can be appreciated by leafing through his notebooks.
