RACAN. OEuvres de M. Honorat de Beuil, chevalier seigneur de Rayan. A Paris, chez Coutelier, 1724. 2 vol. in-12, fawn calf, ornate ribbed spines, coats of arms on covers, red tr. (Rel. of the period). First collective edition. Contains the Pseaumes (vol. I), and Les Bergeries (vol. II). Racan (1589-1670), a poet and disciple of Malherbe, produced a great deal of verse, which he subjected strictly to the master's prescriptions and his most narrow férule, despite the reticence inspired by his temperament: lyrical verses sought after by collective collections, the dramatic pastoral Les Bergeries performed with great success, and which remains his best-known title.
