Epistre composée par Marot de la veüe du Roy et de Lempereur. Dont le contenu est de la autre costé de ce feuillet. Parisis, 1539. Pet. in-16, 147 pages, red morocco, spine decorated with gilt foliage, inner tooth, gilt edges (Trautz- Bauzonnet). EXTREMELY RARE LITTLE BOOK, PRINTED IN FINE CHARACTER and decorated with very curious woodcut figures. It contains 21 pieces, most of which appeared separately in 1537 and 1538, plus six new pieces concerning the famous Marot-Sagon quarrel which, having begun as a simple spat between the two poets in the courtyard of the Château d'Alençon, subsequently escalated into a full-blown literary quarrel prefiguring, a century earlier, the no less famous Querelle du Cid. This collection of pamphlets is therefore infinitely valuable for the literary history of the 16th century (Cat. Rothschild, 621). An elegant copy, from the libraries of Ch. Nodier (bookplate and a few words in his hand, in pen, cat. no. 364), Comte de Fresne (bookplate, cat. no. 206) and de la Germonière (bookplate, sale April 29, 1966, cat. no. 245).
