First edition of this masterpiece of 18th-century gallant literature. "A book worthy of ranking with Manon Lescaut at the head of French novels" (Gay,II, 568). A fine copy, in contemporary condition, from the libraries of G. de Pixérécourt (bookplate, cat. No. 1263) and Ed. de Goncourt (bookplate engraved by Gavarni and autograph signature in red ink). Ed. de Goncourt cites this volume in "La Maison d'un Artiste" (II, p. 20).
