HERBERSTAIN (Sigismund, Baron de). Rerum Moscoviticarum Comm - Lot 22
HERBERSTAIN (Sigismund, Baron de). Rerum Moscoviticarum Commentarii Sigismundi Liberi Baronis in Herberstain, Neyperg, et Guettenhag... Basilae, Per Joannem Oporinum, s. d. (1556). In-folio (347x216), soft ivory vellum with overlays, long title on spine, in pen (contemporary binding). This beautiful work, which was for a long time the only one on Russia in Europe, is illustrated with a title, 12 maps, plates, figures and ornate letters, woodcut by Augustin Hirschvogel (1506- 1560), this illustration is very curious: the Tzar, sledges, aurochs, a map of Moscow, one of the first maps of the Moscow area...(Schwarz: Augustin Hirschvogel, p. 164). The author of this work, a German aristocrat (1486-1566), was sent on two of the diplomatic missions from which our book derives: first by the Austrian Emperor Maximilian I in 1517, then by Archduke Ferdinand in 1526 to negotiate a peace treaty between King Sigismund I of Poland and Tsar Vasily III. A SUPERB EXEMPLAIRE IN PERFECTLY FRIENDLY EPOQUE IVORY VELIN, it belonged to a member of the Fugger family, as it bears the stamp of the Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein on the title.
