In-12, red morocco, spine with 5 ornate nerves, framed with 3 threads on the boards, double marbled paper endpapers, gilt tr. (Rel. anc.). ORIGINAL EDITION, very rare, of this work, Diderot's first personal work, yet it was hastily composed in a few days, to provide for the financial needs of a wife to whom he felt obliged. An anti-clerical and anti-religious work, Les Pensées was immediately condemned to fire by order of the Parlement de Paris on July 7 of the year of publication, and Diderot was ordered to make amends. - Engraved, unsigned frontispiece. A very fine copy in contemporary morocco.
