BEATI RHENANI selestadiensis Rerum Germanicarum libri tres, - Lot 6
BEATI RHENANI selestadiensis Rerum Germanicarum libri tres, ab ipso autore diligenter reuisi et emendati, addito memorabilium rerum Indice accuratissimo. Basileae (Basel), 1551. In-folio, supple ivory vellum, gilt thread, repeated gilt numerals on spine, gilt arms in center (Rel. anc.). This chronicle by the German humanist Bild, known as Beatus Rhenanus (1485-1547), with the fine mark of Froben, is not cited by Brunet or Graesse. It contains a number of fine ornate letters, including Hercules and Antaeus, on a black background. A superb copy WITH THE FIRST ARMS OF DE THOU, the greatest bibliophile of his time, before his marriage (Olivier pl. 216, fer I), whose vellum bindings with his arms are the most attractive. From the library of President Robert Schuman (initials in ink on the flyleaf).
