Sèvres : Pair of hard porcelain banded vases named Leriche snake vases, of baluster form, provided with handles formed of two snakes entwined, with decoration in gold heightened in brown on scale bottom of ancient figures on the band framed of friezes of foliage and sowing of stars and gold peas, the square base in the imitation of the gray marble. Marked : Mre Imple de Sèvres. Empire period, circa 1805. Height 36,5 cm Crack on a neck, gold wear, small chips at the end of the handles and on the corners of the bases. Provenance : Most probably offered by the Emperor Napoleon I in 1806 to Maurice Jean Madeleine de Broglie (1766-1821), bishop of Acqui, son of the duke and marshal of Broglie (1718-1804), on the occasion of the marriage of his niece Stéphanie de Beauharnais with the grand duke of Bade. This form of vase is created around 1787. A drawing preserved in the archives of the manufacture carries the inscription "given to make by M. Régnier according to a vase of M. Le Riche which one rectified to be assembled on April 4, 1787". The plaster is published by Albert Troude under the name: vase snakes Leriche. In 1805, the gilder Leguay receives payment for "two vases with snake handles in gold shaded bas-reliefs". On April 21, 1806, by order of the Emperor and King are offered to Mr. de Broglie, bishop of Acqui, a pair of vases with snake handles at the bottom shell at the price of 500 francs on the occasion of the marriage of the niece adoptive of the Emperor, Stephanie Beauharnais, with the Grand Duke Charles II of Baden (Archives, City of ceramics, Sèvres and Limoges, SCD Vbb2, f° 63 and Dr. Rosmarie Stratmann- Dösseldorf) Rosmarie Stratmann- Döhler, "Zur Hochzeit von Stephanie de Beauharnais - Höfische Geschenke aus der kaiserlichen Porzellanmanufakur Sèvres", Weltkunst, no. 1, January 1995, pp. 16-19). Maurice Jean Madeleine de Broglie (1766-1821) was appointed chaplain to the Emperor in 1804. He followed Napoleon to Italy. He published a mandement on the occasion of the battle of Austerlitz praising the Emperor. He was named bishop of Acqui in 1805.
