Eugène Martial SIMAS (after) & FAIENCERIE DE SARREGUEMINES "The Champagne" (model created circa 1895). Rectangular wall panel composed of ninety polychrome glazed earthenware tiles set in a wooden structure. Décor of a young woman with the antique holding a glass of champagne on a bottom of plants framed of a frieze of volubilis stylized on yellow bottom. Bears the stamp of the manufacture in bottom on the left. Height. 196,5 - Width. 83,5 cm Provenance: this panel comes from the decoration of the brewery La Taverne du Palais which was located Place Saint-Michel in Paris. History: Eugène Martial SIMAS (1862-1939), painter and decorator, led a fruitful collaboration at the end of the nineteenth century with the Alsatian manufacture manufacture of Sarreguemines. This artistic exchange gave birth to monumental decorations that can still be seen today in the famous Parisian brasserie Mollard or in the Tours train station. A panel with a similar decoration is kept in the Museum of Champagne Wine and Regional Archaeology in Épernay.
