POE (EDGAR). The Raven. The Raven. Poem by Edgar Poe. French - Lot 300
POE (EDGAR). The Raven. The Raven. Poem by Edgar Poe. French translation by Stéphane Mallarmé with illustrations by Édouard Manet. P., R. Lesclide, 1875. In-folio, (547 x 358 mm); (6 ff.), 4pl., 1 flyleaf on parchment. Bound in black morocco, the illustrated cover with the raven, printed on parchment paper with the mention of the price in the lower right corner (25 F) is inserted on the first cover of the binding with a black morocco frame, smooth spine with gilt letters, black paper endpapers. gilt lettering, black paper endpapers, gilt head, untrimmed, slipcase (P.L. Martin). ORIGINAL EDITION of St. Mallarmé's translation, his first published work. FIRST AND CELEBRATED ILLUSTRATION BY ÉDOUARD MANET including the title-page in red and black ink with on the verso the justification of the edition, this one, N° 196 is signed by St. Mallarmé and Éd. Manet. The printed justification announces an edition of 240 copies, but recent research shows that this edition probably did not exceed 150 copies. One pen-and-ink lithograph on parchment for the flying "ex-libris". Four full-page lithographs on Hollande laid paper; these plates, reproduced in most books on the art of the book, are among the artist's finest; a total of 6 ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATIONS BY EDOUARD MANET. Plus 5 ff. for the English text, the French translation and the press proof with the motto of Alcan Lévy. RARE ILLUSTRATED POSTER printed in red and black on parchment paper added to the work in free endpapers (516x341 mm.). The Raven associating three famous names: Poe, Mallarmé, Manet and the publisher Lesclide marks the outcome of a publishing project making this book mythical, the first modern illustrated book erected as an art object. A RARE EXAMPLE so complete and in such a large format in a BINDING BY P.-L. MARTIN, of great sobriety and perfect elegance. The raven illustrating the first cover, thus framed in binding, is of a striking effect.
