O' NEDDY (Philothea). Fire and Flame. P., Dondey-Dupré, 1833 - Lot 290
O' NEDDY (Philothea). Fire and Flame. P., Dondey-Dupré, 1833. In-8, red maroq. Hermès jans. with inner teeth, gilt head, cover on board, case (Thivet et Durvand). ORIGINAL EDITION of this book printed in only 300 copies and one of the rarest of the romantic series. Philotée O' Neddy is the anagram of Théophile Dondey. The frontispiece drawn and engraved by Celestin Nanteuil is one of the best and most beautiful of this artist. Th. Gautier reports having seen C. Nanteuil make a print background by stamping his plate through the mesh of a piece of tulle: it is on the title of "Feu et Flamme" that this process is noticed. Considered as the poetic manifesto of the literary group known as "Camaraderie" (to which Petrus Borel and Gérard de Nerval belonged), this collection of poems of great "bousingot" lyricism is appreciated as one of the masterpieces of "frenetic" romanticism. Asselineau devotes 17 pp. of his "Bibliographie romantique" to this work. A very nice copy, bound around 1880 with the rare cover, slightly soiled.
