MAYNARD (François). Les OEuvres. In Paris, at Augustin Courb - Lot 138
MAYNARD (François). Les OEuvres. In Paris, at Augustin Courbé, 1646. In-4 red morocco, broad lace of flowers and foliage framing the covers, corner designs, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated, inner dent. (18th century binding). ORIGINAL COLLECTIVE EDITION (173 unpublished pieces) of the works of this poet of whom the Dict. des Lettres françaises says that "today good judges consider that he has several times surpassed his master (Malherbe) by achievements of an unforgettable beauty". It is decorated with a portrait-frontispiece engraved by Daret and a vignette engraved on the title. A complete copy, with the dedication to Mazarin, conforming to that of the De Backer catalogue (No. 674), in a very BEAUTIFUL LARGE DENTELLE BINDING of the 17th century, bearing in the centre the (slightly later) coat of arms of J.-L. de Viefville des Essart (1744-1820), lawyer, deputy of the baillage of Vermandois to the Estates General, Conservator of waters and forests... (Révérend, p. 366, pl.114). We know Baudelaire's admiration for Maynard, of whom he copied some sonnets.
