LA BRUYÈRE. The Characters of Theophrastus. Translated from - Lot 123
LA BRUYÈRE. The Characters of Theophrastus. Translated from the Greek, with The Characters or Moeurs de ce siècle. Eighth edition, revised, corrected and increased. In Paris, by Michallet, 1694. In-12 of (16) ff, 716 pp, XLIV pp, ( 4) ff. black morocco, spine with 5 ribbed bands, small inner tooth, endpapers of purplish paper with gold decoration, gilt on marble (Binding ancest.). ORIGINAL edition, THE EIGHTH, containing 1,120 characters, 46 of which had not yet been published, such as Cydias, Clitophon, Antagoras, Carro-Carri. The Discours de réception à l'Académie française is published here for the first time with the Caractères. In this edition, La Bruyère wanted to give a logical and continuous form to his work; this idea led him to modify the order of the Characters so as to introduce an "insensible sequence" (Chemerzine). Tchémerzine, III, 806-808; Brunet, III, 720; Cioranescu, 37514. A copy with the very first printing remarks on pages 129, 133 and 282. Folio 293-294 is hardback. A handwritten note from the time in ink, on a flyleaf, indicates that this copy belonged to the Countess de Béthune in Glatigny (armorial bookplate). EXTREMELY RARE IN SUCH CONDITION.
