ARCHITECTURE. - FALDA (Gio. Battista) and Gio. Parte quarta. Rome, Giacomo de Rossi, s.d. (1691).4 parts in one oblong in-folio volume, marbled calf, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt roulette on the edges, edges jasp. (Binding of the period). FIRST EDITION. Superb collection of 99 views of public fountains of Rome and its surroundings, drawn and engraved by Falda (1st and 2nd parts) and Venturini (3rd and 4th parts). The four parts include 31, 16, 25 and 27 engravings respectively; each of these suites is introduced by an engraved title in a right-hand frame and by a beautiful engraved dedication: to Agostino Chigi Prince of Farnese for part I, Giovanni Francesco Negroni for part II, Livio Odescalchi nephew of Pope Innocent XI for part III, and finally Francesco II Duke of Modena and Reggio for part IV. Three plates, of large size, have been folded. (Binding worn, inf. spotting and angular russ.). Giovanni Battista Falda, born around 1640 in Valdaggia, Milan, went to Rome at a very young age to perfect his drawing skills, and since then has devoted himself entirely to engraving. Huber (Manuel des amateurs) finds a great resemblance between the manner of Falda and that of Israel Silvestre. He engraved the main views of Rome from his own drawings, or from those of the cavalier Bernini. His etchings are much sought after. (W. S.) "The drawings and engravings of his gardens, fountains and public buildings are executed with a very great science of perspective and adorned with figures." Benezit, IV, 255. The Fowler Architectural Collection of the John Hopkins University, 117; Brunet II, 1172. SUPERB EXAMPLE, very pure, engraved on large paper (275x400 mm.), preserved in its contemporary binding.
