Benjamin CONSTANT (1767-1830). L.A.S., 3 June [1820], to Pierre-François TISSOT, at the Pilot's office; 1 page in-4, address. Report of an incident during the demonstration for the second anniversary of the death of Nicolas LALLEMAND (law student killed by a royal guard, from behind, and became a liberal rallying point). He went this morning with Mr de Thiard to attend the service of the young Lallemand. "We found a large gendarmerie picket, which did not allow anyone to enter the church [Saint-Eustache]. Many young men gathered around our car, which withdrew, and some of them shouted out loud B. Constant. We were continuing to withdraw, when all of a sudden about ten gendarmes surrounded our car & told us they had orders to arrest him. It was all the more badly seen, for if there was no means of causing disorder, nothing was more likely to produce it than to hold us back in the middle of the crowd. Fortunately a few words from us encouraged the young men to disperse. After 10 minutes, the Police Commissioner came. It seems that it was without his knowledge that one of his agents had given this order & we continued on our way. As we are probably the only Members of Parliament in Paris who responded to the invitation of the friends of the unfortunate Lallemand, we did not want the patriotic newspapers to mention it, so that our colleagues would not think that we had wanted to make ourselves known. If the ultra newspapers talk about it we will respond ...
