Haut. 48 - Larg. 64 cm The passions of Rena and Jean-Louis There is an unspoken complicity in our relationships with objects, a sort of meeting- point at the crossroads of our respective destinies. It is said that objects have a soul, and undoubtedly they possess the soul of that person who comes across them at a chance meeting. How do we communicate with something that will make up, in some part at least, the legacy of our lifetime ? I spent many wonderful moments with Rena, whether in front of a painting at FIAC or on one of our many adventures abroad, and she was fascinated by the work of artisans, those men and women who fashion small masterpieces from the humblest of materials using natural fibres and embroidery. We would journey to secret, hidden places to uncover collector's items, or simply to meet the people who possessed these wonderful objects. On a trip with Jean Louis, I saw them purchase their first paintings under glass at an antique shop in India, where the owner treated us like royalty. It was a delight, not least because each painting was as captivating as the one before. High up on the walls of that caravanserai there was a frieze, still under glass, that depicted a caravan of elephants accompanied by a procession of dancers and musicians. Those images are now present on one of our carrés dedicated to India. Our constant search was driven by the excitement, the emotion, and the idea of finding objects that would feed our imagination. Rena and Jean-Louis would devote all their care and attention to discovering items that evoked memories of their childhood, or that would complement their way of life so perfectly that it would be as if they had always been part of it.
