DREADED (P. J.). Choice of the most beautiful Flowers and Fruits. P., Panckoucke, s. d (1833). Small in-folio (335x240 mm.) brown half-chagr. binding, spine decorated in gold and cold, n. r. (Bound in contemporary style). FIRST EDITION AND FIRST PRINTING. SUPERB WORK, extremely rare, containing 144 plates of flowers, bouquets and fruits, engraved with dotted lines, printed in colours and retouched with a brush. The plates with all margins are preceded by the title, the introductory leaflet (2 ff.) and followed by the alphabetical and explanatory table (17 p.) published by A. Guillemin. Le choix des plus belles fleurs, published in 36 issues between March 1827 and June 1833, is a selection of the most beautiful original prints by Redouté. Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) "the Raphael of flowers" was appointed by Queen Marie-Antoinette as painter and draughtsman of her cabinet and her private teacher. During the lessons he gave her, Redouté grouped the most beautiful flowers from the greenhouses of Versailles in Japanese or Sevres vases and, before the queen's eyes, he produced a splendid watercolour in less than an hour. He added to his talent as a painter a solid knowledge of horticulture. His iconography, which focuses on neglected species and especially on old roses in European gardens, remains a precious source for the identification of flowers that have become rare. A VERY GOOD COPY IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING WITH LARGE MARGINS. Dunthorne, 235. Hunt, 21. (Minor staining or yellowing to 2 or 3 plates).
