LA MÉSANGÈRE (P. de). Observations on the... - Lot 260 - Ferri & Associés
LA MÉSANGÈRE (P. de). Observations on the Fashions and Customs of Paris to serve as an explanation of the 115 caricatures published under the title of the good kind since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Paris, chez l'éditeur, boulevard Montmartre, no 1, Vassal et Essling Imprimeurs, 1827. In folio (406x270 mm) with 116 copper-engraved plates enhanced with watercolour, bound in red half-maroon with long grain, corners, smooth spine decorated, n. r. (Binding circa 1870). Faux-title, title and 24 pp. of Observations sur les modes et les usages de Paris which are the explanation of the 115 plates. ILLUSTRATION: the 116 plates (pl. 39 is double) consist of 105 copper engravings forming the first edition of 1817, all printed on beautiful laid paper, characteristic of early editions, with the exception of 9 plates printed on wove paper (pl. 55, 56, 59, 60, 71, 72, 75, 76, 86), and 11 additional plates forming the edition of 1822. the 1822 edition, all printed on laid paper, with the exception of plate 110 printed on wove paper. ALL THE COPPER ENGRAVINGS HAVE BEEN HEIGHTENED AT THE TIME WITH A VERY BEAUTIFUL COLOURING. These engravings on the manners, costumes and entertainments of the Empire and the Restoration by Gatine, Schenker and others were made on drawings by C. Vernet, Debucourt, Isabey, Lanté, Dutailly... PROVENANCE: Montgermont (1913, No 264); Princess Murat (1921) and Lemallier. (Freckles, mainly on the text; slight scuffing to the binding). This famous collection of plates is rare, especially when it has such large margins as this copy. Most of those encountered show some form of heterogeneity in the paper of the plates which are here, in their great majority, printed on laid paper, a mark of first state. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE, AT ALL MARGINES, AND IN BEAUTIFUL COLOURS OF THE TIME, WELL COMPLETED WITH 115 PLATES and containing in addition pl. 39bis: Les Titus et les cache-folies (published in the 1822 issues).
