GONCOURT (Edmond and Jules de). Renée Mauperin. Edition decorated with 10 etchings by James Tissot. P., Charpentier, 1884. Gr. in-8, red marocco, spine with 5 nerves, in the centre of the boards the initials E. J. intertwined in an oval gilt medallion, inside wide marocco border with gilt fillets and corner fleurons, lining and endpapers of brocaded silk with branches, foliage and flowers, double endpapers, gilt on witnesses, cons. cover. (Marius Michel). Edition illustrated with 10 original etchings outside the text by the painter-engraver James Tissot (Nantes, 1836 - Buillon, 1902), friend of Degas and Seymour-Haden, in first edition. SUPERB AND PRECIOUS EXEMPLAIRE OF EDMOND DE GONCOURT, BINDED AT ITS CHIFFRE À L'ÉPOQUE BY MARIUS MICHEL, on the flyleaf the bookplate by Gavarni and, above, this autograph note in red ink, signed: "My copy. One of the twenty copies on imperial paper of Japan, containing in addition to the two series of plates illustrating these copies: I° A complete suite of a first state of etchings (pure etching). II° A complete suite of the very first proofs of the second state made for the artist, with the signature of the aquafortist and the book page in pencil. These two series were given to me by Tissot. E. de G. (Wentvoort, 62-71, describes only two states). In his Journal Ed. de Goncourt speaks of Tissot "assimilated by England to the point of Tissot tells me that he loves England, London, the smell of coal, because it smells of Tissot tells me that he loves England, London, the smell of coal, because it smells of the battle of life.
