The illustrations were first published in London with an English text by Jerrold.four years later, Louis Hénault made a French adaptation for Hachette. ONE OF THE VERY RARE EXAMPLES ON CHINESE PAPER, in a strictly period binding, with large margins (378x282 mm.), it comes from the library of M. Templier, son-in-law of the publisher and V. de la Fortelle (ex-libris). Leblanc, Catalogue de l'oeuvre complet de Gustave Doré, pp. 107-108. Adhémar, Exposition Gustave Doré, B.n.F., 1974: "This is probably Gustave Doré's masterpiece". (Inf. stain on the false title). Remarkable book, for which Gustave Doré had hired two detectives so that he could penetrate even the slums. His investigation of working-class London is particularly striking. The illustrator plays to perfection with the contrasts between a worldly and light London represented by views shrouded in mist and elegance in the manner of Constantin Guys (racecourses, meetings of good society) and a working-class, impoverished London, whose images are dark and brutal, teeming, often nocturnal, in a style rather reminiscent of Daumier. Among these, the walk of the inmates of Newgate prison is famous; it served as a model for a painting by Vincent Van Gogh.
