ORIGINAL EDITION AND FIRST ISSUE of a Romantic publication as literary as graphically important. Unpublished works by George Sand, P.J. Stahl (J. Hetzel), Léon Gozlan, Frédéric Soulié, Théophile Gautier, Alfred de Musset, Eugène Sue, J. Janin, de Stendahl (sic), Honoré de Balzac ("I have written for 3000 fr. some very funny tales" to Madame Hanska). the profuse illustration includes about 800 beautiful woodcut figures in the text and 212 others off-text by Gavarni, except for the last four which are by Bertall. SUPERB EXAMPLE bound by Mercier with the illustrated covers in perfect condition, which Carteret announces as "extremely rare", the publication prospectus of the work, that of the Geographie de Paris and three of the yellow delivery covers, also in first printing (without the map of Paris, which is not part of the work).
