PRECIOUS UNIQUE EXAMPLE, FROM THE J. BRIVOIS LIBRARY, described in the Trésor du Bibliophile, absolutely complete with text and plates, with all titles and tables in the first edition except for vol. 10 for which there are none (this one is therefore later), the two supl.ts for Nos. 30 and 55, the 2 pl. by Philipon : Croquades prises à l'audience..., the folded pink poster (No124) : Théâtre des Folies politiques, No. 9 contains pl. 19 : Un Ami du Peuple by H. Monnier which is missing in most copies, all proofs are unfolded and of LUXURY PRINTING ON CHINESE FIXED OF INCOMPARABLE QUALITY ! The No. specimen and model (very rare) with its two lithographs by Granville (Restoration, in black) and H. Monnier (An Unmovable, col.), printed on white paper (and accompanied by a specimen on yellow paper), the first 7 Nos are in original prints (very rare, another ex. in final print has been added), finally the following pieces have been attached to this precious copy: 1) 6 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS executed in view of lithogr. for this publication, by Raffet (4), Granville (Resurection of the Censor) and Philipon (Croquades de poires prises à l'audience du 14 Nov. 1831). 2) Portraits of the main contributors: Philipon, founder (3 and one autograph), Desnoyers, editor (2), Daumier (3), Decamps, Grandville (3), H. Monnier (3), Raffet, Roubaud and Traviès. 3) The complete collection (minus 3 plates) in black, i.e. before colouring, of the proofs that were given in colour to the subscribers (these proofs are extremely rare). 4) 39 proofs of state or before the letter of pl. published in "La Caricature". 5) 179 black or coloured plates of political cartoons published for the most part by Aubert but sold separately outside the newspaper. No. 209, contains a plate numbered 437 by Aug. Bouquet: Mettons du foin dans nos bottes, which was replaced and is only found in the other Brivois copy, bound by Maylander for Dr. Roudinesco. Finally, various leaflets or specimens (advertisements for the Caricature, the Charivari, etc...) have been attached, as well as a reproduction of Raffet's plate: Louis Philippe et le Comte de Chambord, printed at 5 copies only, according to the unique proof of the B. N. F. EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION. The copy, with all margins, is perfectly preserved, in spite of inevitable and light foxing to some plates and small wetness to some added parts, text ff. uniformly foxed on the end of the publication, as always. A war machine against the regime of Louis-Philippe which had to undergo censorship throughout its existence. La Caricature ceased to appear in August 1835, victim of a law re-establishing censorship, announced in the last issue. Provided by J. Brivois (with numerous handwritten research notes and often his initials on the back of added or exceptional plates). H. Marillier (Vte at Drouot, 1964). Marcel Lecomte (ex-libris and numerous annotations and comments especially concerning Daumier). Ref : Vic. T.II, col.46 to 81; L.D., 40 to 130.
