DANGEAU (PHILIPPE DE COURCILLON MARQUIS DE).... - Lot 205 - Ferri & Associés
DANGEAU (PHILIPPE DE COURCILLON MARQUIS DE). Journal. P., Firmin Didot frères, 1854-1860. 19 volumes in-8, red half-chagr. (Bound in contemporary style). First complete edition, based on a manuscript copy annotated by Saint-Simon, by Charles-Philippe de Chennevières- Pointel, Louis Dussieux, Paul Mantz, Anatole de Montaiglon, Eudore Soulié. Some extracts of the text had appeared from 1770. "Precious source of information [...] on the second half of the reign of Louis XIV and a chronological guide especially. It serves to check this or that date, this or that fact, and allows, by its coldness and impartiality, to reduce to fair proportions the passionate judgments of Saint-Simon" (SHF, n° 865). The Marquis de Dangeau kept this diary for 36 years, from April 1684 to August 1720, and recorded the ceremonies of Versailles, the details of etiquette, the trips to Marly, the events of the family life of Louis XIV and his entourage, etc. Great-grandson of Duplessis-Mornay, the Marquis de Dangeau (1638-1720) had a successful career as a soldier and courtier, each of which built on the other: in 1665 he was lieutenant-colonel of the king's regiment, in 1667 governor of Touraine, served in the Dutch war where he was for a time aide-de-camp to the king, and volunteered in the war of the League of Augsburg. His rapid passage in the service of Spain allowed him to enter in 1663 the circles of Anne of Austria and Maria Theresa, and to be appreciated by Louis XIV for his finesse and his talents as a poet. The king used him in diplomatic missions to the Elector Palatine (1672) and to England (1680), and showered him with titles and honours: academician in 1664, grand master of the orders of Saint Lazarus and Mount Carmel, the duchess of Burgundy, etc. A FINE COPY IN A NICE AND FRESH CONTEMPORARY BINDING.
