VIRGILE. Les OEuvres, translatées du latin en françays. Paris, Dudin Petit, 1540. gothic folio of 2 and CCII ff. with 2 cols., full binding, red marocco, spine decorated with gold and mosaic, boards entirely covered with a decoration of palmettes and straight and curved gilt threads, enhanced by mosaics in three tones (blue, black and green), lining of blue morocco framed with gilt foliage garlands, blue moire endpapers, double endpapers, gilt tr. on marbling, thread on the edges, maroq. case. (Lortic). 2-column edition, with Latin text in the margin, illustrated with numerous woodcuts, some already used in the 1529 edition, mark of Jehan Petit in the title frame and at the end of the work. The translations of the Bucolics and the Georgics are by Michel de Tours, that of the Aeneid by Octavian de Saint-Gelais. A wide-margined and perfectly preserved copy, in an AMAZING MOSAIC BINDING, imitating the fanfare bindings, probably executed for an exhibition and CONSIDERED AS ONE OF THE MASTERPIECES EXECUTED BY THIS GREAT BINDING MASTER.
