VARIGNON. Nouvelles conjectures sur la Pesanteur.... - Lot 165 - Ferri & Associés
VARIGNON. Nouvelles conjectures sur la Pesanteur. A Paris, chez Boudot, 1690. pet. in-8, red maroq., spine decorated with lizards, framed with 3 threads on the boards and coat of arms in the centre, gilt on marble (Binding ancest.). Important work, dedicated to Bossuet. In his "warning" the author says: "M. Descartes has taught us not to respect the opinions of the ancient Philosophers; he has even taught us not to respect his own, by showing us that in the Sciences there is only truth which is worthy of our respect... I was satisfied for a long time with his opinion on gravity; but since then, on examining it more closely, it has no longer seemed plausible to me..." The volume is adorned with an engraved vignette (Retombera-t-il?), repeated and 6 engraved folding plates, giving 28 figures. A very fine copy, WITH THE ARMS OF FRANÇOIS-MICHEL LE TELLIER, MARQUIS DE LOUVOIS ET DE COURTENVAUX, second son of Michel, chancellor of France, 1641-1691 (Olivier, pl. 1755, iron 5).
