ZOLA (É.). Éd. Manet. Biographical and critical... - Lot 90 - Ferri & Associés
ZOLA (É.). Éd. Manet. Biographical and critical study accompanied by a portrait of Ed. Manet by Bracquemond and an etching of Ed. Manet after Olympia. Paris, E. Dentu, 1867. In-8 (237 x 152 mm) br. 1 engraved frontispiece portrait, 48 pp. 1 plate out of text printed on blue paper cover. FIRST EDITION. The booklet was sold at the retrospective exhibition organized by Manet himself, in a pavilion built at his own expense at the Alma, on the sidelines of the Universal Exhibition and the 1867 Salon, from which he had been excluded. "I hope it will set the world on fire," said the artist of this first monograph devoted to him. The illustration includes a portrait of the artist engraved by Bracquemond as a frontispiece and an original etching by Édouard Manet depicting Olympia. This engraving of the painting of Olympia, which Zola had described as the painter's "masterpiece", testifies to their friendship and their work together for the success of the retrospective exhibition, which was a complete failure. (Harris, Édouard Manet. The Graphic work, 1990, no. 53). Critical study in three parts: The Man and the Artist, The Works, The Public - and a dazzling "defense and illustration" of Manet's art and naturalism in general: "I do not believe it is possible to achieve a more powerful effect with less complicated means."
